The Warwicks 1914 - 1918

Involvement of the 1st Battalion during the Great War.

1914
On the 4th August, as war is declared on Germany, the 1st Battalion is stationed in Shorncliffe, Kent, as part of the 10th Brigade, 4th Division.

22 Aug - 4th Division Lands in France.
26 Aug - 01 Sep - The Battle of Le Cateau.
07 - 10 Sep - The Battle of the Marne.
07 - 10 Sep - The Battle of the Aisne.
13 Oct - 02 Nov - The Battle of Armentieres, Capture of Meteren.

1915
22 Apr - 25 May - Second Battle of Ypres.

1916

1917
09 - 14 April - First Battle of the Scarpe.

1918
28 Mar - The First Battle of Arras 1918.
12 - 15 Apr - The Battle of Hazebrouck (Defence of Hinges Ridge).

18 Aug - 06 Sep - Advance in Flanders.
26 - 30 Aug - The Battle of the Scarpe.
02 - 03 Sep - The Battle of Drocourt-Queant.
27 Sep - 01 Oct - The Battle of the Canal du Nord.
17 - 25 Oct - The Battle of the Selle.
01 - 02 Nov - The Battle of Valenciennes.

On 11th November 1918, the 1st Battalion is located S.E. of Valenciennes, France.

(The 4th Division was demobilised in Belgium in early 1919.)

Potted history of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

Formed in 1674 as the 6th Regiment of Foot.
Title changed to The Royal (1st) Warwickshire Regiment in 1832.
Regimental Depot established at Warwick in 1873.
Title changed to The Royal Warwickshire Regiment in 1881.
1st Bn fought in the Sudan 1896 - 1898.
Elements of 1st Bn and 2nd Bn plus Vol Bn saw action in the Second Anglo-Boer War 1898 - 1902.
Regiment raised 30 Battalions in the Great War, gained 80 Battle Honours and won 6 Victoria Crosses.
Saw service on the North West Frontier of India between the wars.
Regiment served with the British Expeditionary Force and was in the first assaults on D-Day.  Took part in the capture of Bremen and fought in Burma.
Post Second war the Regiment served in Palestine 45-48, Korea 53-54, Cyprus 55-59 and the Arabian Peninsula 57-60.

Became Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers in 1963 finally being absorbed into the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in 1968.
